Grosseto, located in the alluvial plain of the Ombrone river, is a historical town with a fascinating past. In the 8th century, it was settled and quickly became a hub for the salt trade. The town prospered until the 13th and 14th century when it was fiercely fought over by Siena and Florence. Finally, in 1328, the Sienese gained control, but Grosseto's fortunes began to decline due to the silting up of the lagoon and the loss of its salt revenues. The town suffered from depopulation and the spread of malaria. Despite these challenges, Grosseto experienced a revival in the 19th century, regaining its vitality and charm.
