Welcome to Greenville, also known as Senorkree, a captivating city located in Southeast Liberia. Situated by a lagoon near the majestic Sinoe River, Greenville's rich history dates back to its birth in 1838 by courageous colonists from the Mississippi Colonization Society. It was named in honor of Judge James Green, an esteemed planter who was instrumental in resettling former slaves in Liberia. In recent years, Greenville has emerged as an economic powerhouse, boasting a bustling port that serves the flourishing lumber exporters and palm plantations within the county. The city is home to prominent organizations like Golden Veroleum Liberia, a Singapore based palm oil corporation with extensive deforested palm-growing land in Sinoe and Grand Kru Counties. There's also Mandra Forestry, operating near the awe-inspiring Sapo National Park, and numerous NGOs that make a significant impact regionally. Embark on a journey through Greenville and experience its vibrant culture and thriving landscapes firsthand.
Get in
If you're coming from Monrovia, Buchanan, or Harbel on the Coastal Highway in Liberia, it's an excellent opportunity to experience the authentic way of travel for regular Liberians and witness how goods are transported across the country. During the dry season, from late November to early May, the road is relatively manageable for cars and motorbikes. A seat in a car costs around 1500 LRD, and a motorbike trip is approximately 3500 LRD. The travel times are around 8 hours for a car and 6 hours for a motorbike (assuming no breakdowns occur, which is not very likely). But don't worry, even if you face a minor breakdown, the driver will most likely find you another means of transportation like a motorbike to a nearby town for accommodations, food, and further travel arrangements. In the rainy season, from late May to early November, the road conditions worsen gradually, but motorbikes can still navigate through. However, finding car rides becomes difficult, unless you spot a 4WD Land Cruiser parked. Motorbike prices can increase to around 4500 or 5000 LRD. Travel times become variable depending on the severity of the rains, with cars taking anywhere from 10 to 24 hours and motorbikes averaging around 8 hours. If you're flying into Liberia, Greenville has a functioning airstrip built by UNMIL and maintained by the Liberian government. Currently, MAF, a Christian missionary-associated air operator, offers flights from Spriggs Payne Airport in Monrovia to Greenville. A one-way ticket costs about 130 USD, and flights operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. To secure your seat and check flight times and costs, make sure to contact the MAF office at Spriggs Payne. Unfortunately, there is currently no ferry or boat service available from Harper, Buchanan, or Monrovia. So, keep these transportation options in mind when planning your trip!
