The Goldfields-Esperance region in Western Australia is an expansive area, known for its harshness and remoteness. These towns were some of the earliest settlements in the colony, with Esperance being established in 1863 for agriculture, and Coolgardie springing up almost overnight during the gold rush of the late 1800s. Coolgardie quickly became the third largest town in the colony by 1892. While many towns faded away when the gold ran out, leaving behind remnants like broken bottles and rusting wire, others managed to persevere in a diminished form. Places like Kanowna, Dundas, and Niagara serve as reminders of the region's rich history. The Goldfields-Esperance region is typically divided into two halves, with an imaginary line at Kalgoorlie. The northern half is characterized by desert landscapes dominated by mining, while the southern half boasts lush green farmland that extends all the way to the granite-bound coast.
