If you're coming from Chachapoyas, it's an exciting 1-hour and 5-minute journey by vehicle to the village of Cocachimba. First, you'll drive for 45 minutes to reach the intersection and then take a thrilling 20-minute ride on a mototaxi (5 Soles per person). There are two options for getting to Cocachimba if you don't have your own vehicle. Option one is to take a collectivo towards Pedro Ruiz (S/. 5) and get off at the intersection in the small village called Cocahuayco. From there, it's a challenging two-hour mostly uphill walk to Cocachimba. Option two is to negotiate a fare with one of the waiting mototaxis (5 Soles per person). Another alternative is to take a guided tour (40 S/) from Chachapoyas or hire a taxi (around 70 S/) for each way. These tours provide transportation and a guide. You can conveniently leave your backpacks at the ticket office. Once you reach Cocachimba, the real adventure begins. It will take you about 3-4 hours for a return hike to the base of the tallest waterfall, covering approximately 5.5 kilometers each way. The trail is challenging with steep climbs and descents, so don't be fooled by the relatively short distance. The trail can also be very hot, humid, and muddy at times. Be sure to bring plenty of water, wear sun protection, and suitable footwear, especially after rainfall. You might even want to bring a bathing suit if you feel like taking a refreshing swim in the pool at the base of the falls. For a different experience, there is an alternative route from the village of San Pablo that leads to the base of the first waterfall. This trail is well signposted and passes by some fascinating rock art. After admiring the first fall, you can embark on a thrilling descent down a very steep trail to the lower falls and return via Cocachimba, turning it into an approximately 17-kilometer hike. If you prefer not to hike the entire way, you have the option to rent horses in Cocachimba. For S/. 25, you can have a horse ride to and from the main fall. It's important to note that the horses will not go all the way, so there will still be a 40-minute walk each way at the end of the trail. The handlers will guide the horses on foot, so you don't need any riding experience. If you're going on a tour, make sure to notify them in advance that you'd like to ride horses, preferably before you start your journey or during the drive there.
