Gilgit-Baltistan, covering an area of 72,971 km, is a highly mountainous region with a vibrant history. The administrative center of Gilgit was a crucial city along the Silk Road, through which Buddhism spread from India to the rest of Asia. The region has been an important archaeological site, with numerous Buddhist Sanskrit texts and artifacts being unearthed. Both Faxian and Hsuan Tsang, renowned travelers, have traversed through Gilgit and written accounts of their journeys. Throughout its history, Gilgit has experienced various dynasties, local uprisings, and foreign occupations, with the region finally coming under British rule in 1889. The region's complex political status, claimed by both India and Pakistan, has resulted in an ongoing conflict known as the Kashmir conflict.
