Understand
The Gibb River Road, a historic cattle road dating back to the 1960s, stretches for a staggering 650 km. This extraordinary track, mostly unpaved, weaves its way through the mesmerizing Kimberley region of Australia, connecting the bustling Great Northern Highway on the east to the vibrant town of Derby on the west. It serves as a shortcut, shaving off hundreds of kilometers that would otherwise be covered by the Great Northern Highway, which takes a lengthy detour in the south. Embarking on a journey along the Gibb River Road is not for the faint-hearted; however, with proper caution and preparation, it promises an unforgettable adventure. Traverse through the remote and untamed wilderness, and be rewarded with breathtaking vistas and a true sense of isolation and tranquility.
Get in
Crossing remote and challenging terrain, the Gibb River Road is not easily accessible. However, there are ways to get close to the road. On the western side, you can fly with OZJet between Derby and Perth. If you are on the eastern side, AirNorth offers flights between Kununurra (60 km from the eastern start of the road) and Darwin. For a more adventurous option, you can catch the 22-seater 4WD Gibb River Bus from either Derby or Kununurra. If you prefer to drive the road yourself, you can rent a 4WD vehicle in Kununurra. However, if you plan to make a one-way trip, you may have to return the vehicle in Broome, which is 220 km east of Derby. Be sure to check with the rental company beforehand as there may be additional fees for one-way rentals. Please note that national rental car companies may not have branches in Kununurra due to its small size. If you choose a national rental company, you will need to drive from Darwin to Broome, around a total distance of 1850 km.
