Garanhuns, with a population of 130,000 inhabitants, is the premier winter resort in Northwest Brazil. This city is reminiscent of Rome or Lisbon, as it overlooks seven hills and sits at an elevation of 850m to 1000m above sea level. Surrounded by numerous river sources, Garanhuns enjoys a cool and humid climate, unlike other regions in the Northwest known for their heat and dryness. During the winter, particularly in July, temperatures can drop below 10C, creating the perfect setting for the nationally famous Winter Festival that takes place here. Known as the "Little Switzerland of Pernambuco" and the "City of the Flowers," Garanhuns also holds the distinction of being the birthplace of Brazil's former President, Lula.
