Formerly known as Funchal Airport, Cristiano Ronaldo Airport (IATA: FNC) is located in nearby Santa Cruz. The airport, which was once famous for its hair-raisingly short runway ending at a cliff over the Atlantic Ocean, has now been expanded to accommodate all aircraft sizes. There are several daily flights from major cities in Portugal, such as Lisbon and Porto, with a flight time of approximately 1 1/2 hours from Lisbon. Travelers from London can also easily reach Funchal via flights from Gatwick Airport (LGW) with TAP/Air Portugal and British Airways, with a flight time estimated at 3 1/2 hours. To reach the city center of Funchal by car, take highway ER101, which runs along the coast. Exit at 11 and head downhill towards Funchal. Follow this road (ER103) until you pass under an overpass. You will find a large parking garage on your right (closed on Sundays) and from there it is just a short walk to Mercado Dos Lavradores / S Cathedral. Alternatively, you can take the Aerobus, which runs about 10-14 times a day and stops at major hotels. The tickets can be purchased from the driver, and a one-way ticket costs 5 euros (8 euros for a return ticket). The journey from the airport to the center of Funchal takes approximately 30 minutes.
