Understand
Contrary to popular belief, Franschhoek's history is not solely tied to French Huguenot settlers seeking refuge from persecution. The story of Franschhoek began with Dutch farmers who settled in the Cape in 1652 under the Dutch East India Company. One of these settlers, Simon van der Stel, ventured further inland and discovered the valley where Franschhoek now stands.
Originally named Oliphantshoek due to its abundance of wild animals, including elephants, Dutch farmers were settled in the area to cultivate fruit. It was only after more than a century that the name Franschhoek emerged.
During a period of mass migration, the majority of French Huguenots made their way to the Netherlands. When Simon van der Stel called for more farmers to join him in the Cape, the Dutch offered the opportunity to the French, who eventually settled in the Oliphantshoek Valley. Today, while the local residents may not speak French, the village pays homage to its heritage with French street names, restaurant names, and wine farms.
Franschhoek proudly claims the title of South Africa's food and wine capital. The village is home to numerous exceptional restaurants, offering a delightful gastronomic experience. Visitors can indulge in the finest food and wine, all while soaking in the spectacular atmosphere of Franschhoek.
