Franklin, a town founded in 1741 during the French and Indian War, holds a rich history of conflict and resilience. Situated at the junction of French Creek and the Allegheny River, Franklin became a focal point for the British and French forces. George Washington, the future first president of the United States, was sent to negotiate with the French, but they fiercely resisted British claims. This led to a gathering of troops, including local Indians, preparing to attack nearby Fort Pitt and Fort Dusquesne in present-day Pittsburgh. Eventually, the British launched their assault on Fort Niagara, forcing the French to redirect their troops north. As a result, the territory fell under British control. Franklin's layout underwent a redesign by Andrew Ellicott, the talented designer involved in shaping the layout of Washington, D.C. This transformation brought forth a bustling town. However, Franklin's true transformation came with the discovery of oil in nearby Titusville in 1859. Wealthy oil tycoons flocked to Franklin, bringing prosperity and transforming the town into a hub of industry. Nevertheless, destructive fires in 1892 and 1894 swept through the oil fields, causing a swift dispersion of the wealthy elite. Today, Franklin, along with Titusville and Oil City, forms the renowned Oil Region. Although the town may appear serene, its history is vividly displayed through its architectural wonders. From Victorian to Gothic Revival styles, Franklin showcases a wide array of architectural designs that span the period between 1830 and 1930.
