Embark on a journey to Longo Mai, a remarkable movement that originated in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and France. This community was established by the spirited youth of the "generation 68" in 1973, embodying values of self-governance, agricultural independence, and social empowerment. Witnessing the plight of Nicaraguan refugees, Longo Mai extended a helping hand by providing them with land to rebuild their lives with dignity. Over time, this community has evolved into an ecological haven amidst the sprawling Del Monte pineapple plantations. While these plantations wreak havoc on the environment, the residents of Longo Mai harmonize agriculture with environmental preservation and eco-tourism. Within Longo Mai's boundaries lie 2,200 acres, half of which are protected rainforests teeming with life. Amidst its natural splendor, you'll find vibrant village stores, an educational institution, a kindergarten, and even two churches. It is also home to UNAPROA, a regional environmental organization dedicated to sustainability. Longo Mai opens its doors to both young adventurers seeking cultural immersion and families looking to engage in meaningful experiences. Whether volunteering, completing research, or simply enjoying a serene retreat, Longo Mai provides an ideal refuge. Recognized for its socially responsible tourism practices, it was honored with the prestigious to-do prize in 2004 by the German Studienkreis fr Tourismus und Entwicklung (study group for tourism and development).
