Explore the stunning and remote beauty of New South Wales! Summers here are scorching hot, with dry landscapes and pesky flies. The best time to visit is between May and October when the temperatures are more bearable. However, even in the winter, be prepared for surprisingly cold weather. And watch out for rain, as it can easily close down unsealed back roads and cause occasional flooding. Distances in this vast region are mind-boggling. Even on main roads, you'll find towns and villages spaced out up to 200 km apart. But don't be surprised if you drive on the back roads all day without encountering another vehicle. It's an adventure on its own, but be aware that if your car breaks down, it may take hours for help to arrive. So before embarking on your journey, ensure your car has at least 350 km worth of petrol and always carry plenty of water. Keep in mind that the towns in this area are small and have limited facilities. If you're lucky, you might catch some live music at the local club, but generally, life here is quiet. However, the scenery is absolutely breathtaking! If you head west along the Barrier Highway, you'll witness the shift to red dirt around the mining town of Cobar. Further north, the Kidman Way will take you to Bourke, known for its cotton farming near the Queensland border. To the west, you'll find Wilcannia, once a bustling port on the Darling River. Venture beyond Wilcannia, and you'll reach Broken Hill, a vibrant mining town with a fascinating history. Heading south from Cobar, you'll enter the vast and mostly empty middle of New South Wales. This region, crossed by the Kidman Way and Cobb Highway, is characterized by scrublands and a few tiny towns leading to the southern border of the state. Don't miss the remarkable Lake Mungo, known for its ancient human cremation site. And if you're fortunate enough to experience months of rainfall in southern Queensland, you'll witness the desert lakes of Menindee spring to life. To the northeast and northwest of Cobar lie the isolated opal fields of Lightning Ridge and White Cliffs, where people live off the beaten path, sometimes even underground in White Cliffs. You can arrange tours to explore some of these unique underground places. Finally, in the far northwest of the state, you'll encounter the mesmerizing rock engravings at Mutawintji and the secluded town of Tiboburra. Get ready for an unforgettable journey through history and nature!
