Embark on an epic adventure along the Eyre Highway, a road that stretches for miles through vast and untamed landscapes. As you journey westward, leaving behind the bustling towns of Kimba, Wudinna, and Ceduna, you'll enter a realm of solitude and wilderness. The roadhouses that dot the highway may appear plain and dusty, but they hold the promise of respite and fuel for your journey. Some, like Border Village on the border of South and Western Australia, exude a touch of luxury amidst the ruggedness. However, most of these oases are simple yet charming, offering a mix of accommodation, fuel, and a place to rest. Prepare yourself for the long stretches between roadhouses, with distances averaging 100 km and the longest stretch spanning 190 km between Balladonia Roadhouse and Norseman. Brace yourself for the exhilaration of traveling on the 90-mile straight, a mind-boggling 146.6 km of straight asphalt that cuts through the outback without a single curve. But that's not all. Venture east of Caiguna and discover towns that defy time, operating on their own unofficial time zone—Central Western Standard Time—a unique blend of Western and Central time. Get ready to unravel the mysteries of this extraordinary highway, where every turn holds a new adventure.
Get in
If you're up for an adventurous road trip, you can start your journey to Port Augusta from various locations in New South Wales, Victoria, or Adelaide. And of course, your ultimate destination will be the stunning city of Perth (or vice-versa). Flying in and out of Norseman is also an option, although most travelers prefer the thrill of hitting the open road.
