Eskiehir, a haven of progressiveness in a predominantly conservative region, boasts a rich history. The presence of the Phrygians, who founded Doryleaum near present-day Eskiehir, still echoes in the region known as the "Phrygian Valley." The city's unique liberal mindset can be attributed to its large student population and the influence of progressive-minded refugees from Crimea and the Balkans, who settled there during the Ottoman Empire's decline in the late 19th century. Despite its misleading name, Eskiehir features predominantly new construction, with buildings dating back no more than 50 years. The exception lies in the charming neighborhood of Odunpazar. With its bridges, parks, statues, and trams, Eskiehir has embraced a Central European atmosphere since Ylmaz Bykeren, the former president of Anadolu University, was elected mayor in 1999. The city is divided by the Porsuk River, while the main Istanbul-Ankara railway runs a few blocks north of the river, adding to its distinct character.
