Understand
In the charming town, the focal point of attraction is the magnificent Eiheiji Temple. Established in 1244 by the revered Zen Master Dogen, this temple serves as the head temple of the Soto Zen school. It stands as a symbol of spiritual enlightenment and tranquility. One of the notable contributions of Dogen is a profound poem that encapsulates the essence of self-discovery: - To embark on the path of wisdom is to embark on a journey of self-discovery. - Through self-discovery, we liberate ourselves from the confines of the self. - The liberation from self allows us to perceive the interconnectedness of all things. - As we embrace this interconnectedness, barriers between ourselves and others dissolve, fostering harmonious relationships.
Get in
Eiheiji, a magnificent temple, is nestled about 15 km away from Fukui City. To get there, you have a couple of options. You can hop on a direct bus from Fukui Station, which runs four times daily and takes only 30 minutes. Another option is to take a train to Eiheiji-Guchi, which will take you 25 minutes, and then catch a connecting bus that will bring you to the temple in just 15 minutes. The choice is yours! Just make sure to ask the bus driver to let you know when you've arrived, as there are a few stops with similar names, which can get a bit confusing. So don't hesitate to ask for guidance along the way! If you're coming from Kanazawa or Kyoto, you can make it to Eiheiji by noon if you catch an early morning train. It's a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich history and tranquil atmosphere of this sacred place. Don't miss it!
