Understand
The Sierra Nevada mountain range, one of the most majestic ranges in the lower-48 states, stretches from north to south, dominating the landscape with its grandeur. Approaching the Sierra Nevada from the west is a gradual ascent, where the landscape transforms from rolling hills to towering mountains. In contrast, the eastern side of the range is a sheer cliff, creating a dramatic contrast in elevation.
Standing at an elevation of 4000 feet near Lone Pine, you can gaze in awe at the magnificent peak of Mount Whitney. Rising to a majestic height of 14,505 feet (4,421 meters), Mount Whitney stands proudly as the highest peak in the United States outside of Alaska. Its snow-capped summit is a breathtaking sight to behold.
The Sierra Nevada, with its extreme change in elevation, presents a formidable challenge for road construction. As a result, there are no roads crossing the Sierra between Kernville and Mono Lake. During winter, all but one of the passes are closed, cutting off access between Kernville and Lake Tahoe.
The Eastern Sierra, nestled within the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada, receives minimal rainfall compared to its western counterpart. Weather systems approaching from the west or southwest bring abundant moisture to the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada, leaving only a trickle for the Eastern Sierra. This unique geographical feature creates a distinct climate and landscape.
The Eastern Sierra is a part of the Great Basin, a region where water does not naturally flow into an ocean. Instead, water finds its way into inland lakes such as the renowned Mono Lake and Walker Lake. To quench the insatiable thirst of urban centers, large quantities of water are collected from these lakes and pumped to Los Angeles, sculpting the intricate relationship between nature and human development.
