Dunhuang, a city founded by Emperor Wudi of the Han dynasty in 111 BC, has a fascinating history as a prominent trading hub on the Silk Road. Its name, meaning "to flourish and prosper," reflects its ancient significance in China. Although it is less important today, Dunhuang still retains its charm as a neat small-sized city centred around a magnificent statue and a vibrant market.
