Despite facing economic challenges in the 1980s due to downsizing and relocations, Dubuque has embraced its heritage and invested in tourism. The city has established historic districts, museums, a greyhound racing park, a casino, a riverside hotel and conference center, and a Smithsonian-affiliated museum dedicated to the Mississippi River's history and biology.
