Dongying, although a small city in China, is home to approximately 1,800,000 people. It may not be widely known, but it boasts the second largest oil field in the country and is situated at the estuary of the Yellow River, China's second longest river. The oil industry thrives in Dongying, which is also the location of the renowned University of Petroleum. Interestingly, Dongying owes its existence to the discovery of the first oil well in a village called Dongying back in 1974. Since then, the city has expanded into two districts: Eastern City and Western City. The former houses the city government and is known for its modernity, while the latter is characterized by bustling business streets. Though caution is advised when taking taxis, as the drivers tend to drive fast and recklessly, they are an affordable mode of transportation in the city, costing only 8 Yuan. Dongying's landscape may not be conducive to plant growth due to the high salt content in the soil. However, this combination of factors makes it an ideal place for conducting business, as its residents have substantial disposable incomes. For expats, Dongying offers two distinct areas to explore: West City and East City. West City is the more developed and vibrant part, with a wide range of Western restaurants and bars to choose from. In fact, Dongying gained international recognition when it was featured in American travel photographer Tom Carter's photobook, China: Portrait of a People, in 2008.
