Understand
Dgo Island is the largest and most remote island of the Oki Islands, located a short ferry ride away from the Dzen Islands. Shaped like a pristine circle, this island was formed by volcanic eruptions millions of years ago, resulting in its mountainous terrain and lush forests. Dgo Island is a treasure trove of cultural traditions, such as bull sumo, Oki Traditional Sumo, and Renge-e-mai Dances. Its beautiful coasts and vibrant traditions offer a unique and captivating experience. Okinoshima-cho (Okinoshima Town) encompasses all regions and villages on the island, including the former Saigo Town. While most of the population resides in the Saigo Area near the port, there are also small villages nestled among the mountains and along the island's coastline. Despite its isolation, the island boasts a population of over 16,000 and offers amenities like shopping centers, restaurants, and essential facilities. Venturing outside the bustling Saigo Area, you'll find yourself immersed in the serene and picturesque countryside. Upon arrival, it is highly recommended to visit the Tourism Office. There, you can obtain maps, make reservations, and receive travel advice. Although the staff may not speak English fluently, English information will be available to assist you. The conveniently located tourism office is situated across from the ferry terminal inside the View Port Hotel building on the first floor. If you seek further information about exploring the wonders of Oki Island, two additional resources are highly recommended: - Okinoshima Town Tourism Association: This tourism association provides comprehensive information about Oki Island and is conveniently located right across from the port in the Viewport Hotel building. - Oki Islands Geopark Visitors Center & Shizen-kan Nature Museum: Situated on the second level of the Port Plaza Hotel, this center offers insight into the Oki Islands Geopark and provides access to the Oki Shizen-kan Nature Museum.
