The Highfields, a legendary British four-masted steel barque commanded by Captain E.R. Dunham, met a tragic fate on August 14, 1902. After setting sail from Cardiff with a cargo of coal bound for Table Bay, the vessel encountered a treacherous storm off the Cape. Buffeted by powerful winds, the Highfields lost most of her canvas, leaving her vulnerable to the elements. Despite her decks being awash, the determined crew managed to reach Table Bay under reduced sails in a desperate search for shelter. In the darkness of the night, the Highfields collided with the anchor chain of the German steamship, Kaiser, which was anchoring just outside the breakwater. The collision jolted the Highfields, briefly lodging her across the bows of the Kaiser before being forcefully dislodged by the wind. Tragically, the Highfields sank within a matter of minutes, taking with her the lives of 23 crew members, including the captain and second mate. In stark contrast, the Kaiser emerged from the incident unscathed, untouched by the collision. This harrowing tale serves as a testament to the perils faced by courageous sailors, braving the unforgiving seas in search of distant horizons. The Highfields' ill-fated journey speaks of the treacherous forces of nature and the bravery of those who dare to venture into the unknown depths of the ocean.
