The wreck of SS Ingrid Horn holds a tragic history. This German cargo ship, measuring 90m in length, was constructed in 1901. On a fateful summer night in 1917, disaster struck as the Ingrid Horn was en route from Lulea to Germany, carrying a precious cargo of iron ore. Another ship, too late to react, collided with the Ingrid Horn, resulting in unimaginable loss. Only one crew member managed to survive out of approximately twenty.
- At the time, the Ingrid Horn was sailing without lit lanterns, a choice made to conserve kerosene during wartime. They likely believed that they would have sufficient time to illuminate the lanterns if another vessel appeared on the horizon. However, tragedy struck when the Swedish cargo ship SS Bergvik, entering Dalar, mistook the Ingrid Horn for a vessel at anchor. Despite their efforts to reverse, it was too late, and the Bergvik's bow pierced three feet into the side of the Ingrid Horn, hastening its descent to the depths.
- Today, this sunken vessel attracts divers from far and wide. It's important to note that it lies in the middle of a shipping route, requiring extra caution and heightened awareness for safety.
