Chuuk Lagoon, part of the Caroline Islands group in the Pacific Ocean, is an archipelago consisting of eleven major islands and numerous smaller ones within the lagoon. During World War II, Truk Lagoon (as it was then known) served as a crucial Japanese naval base and was heavily fortified. Allied forces dubbed it "the Gibraltar of the Pacific." In 1944, Operation Hailstone unleashed a massive airstrike on Truk Lagoon, resulting in the destruction of twelve Japanese warships, thirty-two merchant ships, and 249 aircraft. Today, Truk Lagoon is recognized as the largest ship graveyard in the world, although larger warships had relocated to Palau a week prior to the attack.
