Understand
Delos, also spelled Dilos, is an ancient island that holds great significance in Greek mythology. It is believed to be the birthplace of the twin deities Apollo and Artemis. The island has a rich history, with evidence of human habitation dating back to the 3rd millennium B.C. The sanctuary of Delos, which is considered a Panhellenic sanctuary, became an important religious center in the 7th century B.C. due to its association with Apollo. In fact, Apollo's birthplace is one of the reasons why Delos was a well-known Ionic center in ancient times. Today, the Delos archaeological sanctuary is recognized by UNESCO as one of the most significant cultural and historical sites in the world. Delos is located in the Cyclades, a group of islands that form a circular shape around it. One of these islands, Rhenia, has an important burial ground.
