Dazaifu holds a significant place in Kyushu's history, having served as the local seat of power during imperial rule. It played a vital role due to the close ties and trade between Korea, China, and Japan. Eminent dignitaries visiting the country would often stay in the area. What's more, Dazaifu served as an exile outpost from the Heian capital and was the temporary home of Sugawara no Michizane. Michizane, a prominent politician, poet, and scholar, was tragically sent there due to malicious slander and political manipulation.
Today, Michizane is revered as the god of learning, literature, and calligraphy. The sprawling 3,000-acre Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, established in his honor shortly after his passing, stands as the primary Tenmangu shrine in Japan.
