Daugavpils, a city founded in 1275 by the Livonian Knights, is an ancient and historically significant place. Situated at a crucial intersection of medieval trade routes, it was initially known as Daugava Castle, named after the river that flows through it. Over the centuries, the original castle faced numerous attacks, destruction, and reconstruction until it was captured and obliterated by Ivan the Terrible in 1577. However, this did not mark the end for Daugavpils. The Tsar ordered the construction of a new fortress downstream of the Daugava River in 1720, after the previous fortress was destroyed during the Great Northern War. During this period, the city was under Russian rule and called Dinaburg. The construction of the Dinaburg Fortress, known today as Daugavpils Fortress, began in 1810 and was completed in 1878. It became one of the most significant fortifications of the Russian Empire, serving as a fortified ideal city. Despite its tumultuous past, Daugavpils has evolved into a modern city. In recent years, it has seen the development of various amenities and attractions, including an ice hall, bowling center, and contemporary hotels.
