The city of Derna, located on the beautiful Mediterranean sea, is nestled at the foot of majestic hills that separate it from the bustling trade routes between the Sahara and economic centers like Benghazi. This city has a complex history, with a notorious reputation for producing armed fighters who have joined various Islamic extremist groups. Approximately 800 brave men from Derna have left their homes to fight alongside the likes of The Islamic State, Khettab Brigade, and the Support Front for the Free People of the Sham. In fact, it is even rumored that all assassinations of Islamic State officials, carried out by members of the group themselves, were orchestrated by fearless individuals from Derna. Such was their strength that the al-Khettab Brigade was disbanded in 2014 by ar-Raqqah. In 2014, Derna boldly declared its territory to be under the control of the Islamic State. However, the city's fate took a turn less than 10 months later when the Derna Sharia Council for the Youth emerged and engaged in a fierce battle with the Islamic State for control. As of early 2016, the valiant Youth Council and the resilient Islamic State continue to fight for dominance over this ancient city.
