Understand
Dalu Island, also known as Great Deer Island, is a hidden gem located in the Yellow Sea off the coast of Liaoning Province in China. With an area of approximately 6 square kilometers, it attracts tourists during peak season but remains quiet and serene throughout the rest of the year. The island's population of around 3000 relies mainly on fishing and tourism. Although it may not be a popular tourist spot in China, Dalu Island offers a unique and affordable low-budget overnight trip with picturesque scenery and authentic local experiences.
Get in
Looking to explore Dalu Island? The easiest way to get there by public transport is taking a bus from Dandong's long distance bus station, which is conveniently located opposite Dandong Railway Station. Hop on a two-hour bus ride to Gushan and it will only cost you 17.50 Yuan (May 2013). Travelers heading to Dalu Island should get off a stop earlier at Huangtukan. From there, a local can drive you the next few kilometers to the new ferry terminal. Negotiation skills may come in handy as the charge can be as low as 10 Yuan per person for a group of four. Keep in mind that ferries in the off season run irregularly, with only one at 4pm in the afternoon, possibly the last one. Grab a ticket for 60 Yuan and enjoy a thrilling ride on the ferry, which takes less than 30 minutes. If you're feeling adventurous, speedboats are also available for up to 90 Yuan.
