Cunda Island, also known as Alibey Island, is a remarkable Aegean resort town connected to the Ayvalik district of Balikesir. It is considered one of the most remarkable islands in our country and offers plenty of places to visit. Named after Lieutenant Colonel Ali Etinkaya, who bravely led the first unit that defied the sultan's order to "surrender to the Greeks" during the War of Independence, Alibey Island holds historical significance. Out of the 22 islands surrounding Ayvalik, Cunda is the only one with settlements. In fact, it is the fourth largest island in the Aegean region of our country. The island can be reached via two separate bridges. The first bridge, built in 1964 and known as the Strait Cabinet, connects Cunda and Tulip Island. The second bridge, an impressive 700-meter level bridge road, was constructed in 1817, filling the sea to connect Lale Island with the mainland. Cunda Island is protected due to its natural beauty and historical buildings. In 1976, an area of 17,900 hectares in Ayvalik and its surroundings was officially recognized as a natural and historical site. While exploring the island, you'll encounter a church that was built during a time when Christians and Muslims coexisted. With its narrow streets and charming Greek houses, the church has stood the test of time and still exudes its original charm.
