Understand
Vittoriosa, also known as Birgu, is a historic town in Malta with a rich history. It dates back to ancient times, with Phoenician and Greek influences. As Malta's main port town, Vittoriosa played a significant role throughout the country's history. During the Knights of St. John's rule over Malta, Birgu became the base for their maritime activities. The town's ancient defenses were strengthened, and residences called "Auberges" were built for different groups of knights known as "Langues." In 1565, Vittoriosa faced a fierce siege by the Turkish army under the leadership of admiral Turgut Reis. The town withstood the attack, thanks in part to the bravery of the locals and support from the nearby city of Mdina. This victory led to the town being named Vittoriosa, meaning "victory." In the 19th century, Vittoriosa became an essential hub in Malta's Grand Harbour area. It served as a stopover for British ships traveling between Gibraltar and the Suez Canal. The industrial center of the country, with many docks for shipbuilding, was established in the southern parts of Vittoriosa. Unfortunately, during World War II, the Grand Harbour area, including Vittoriosa, suffered extensive damage due to intense bombing. Despite this history, Vittoriosa has retained its unique charm and heritage. The area is not heavily impacted by tourism, allowing visitors to experience an authentic and untarnished glimpse into Malta's past. Today, part of Fort St. Angelo has been returned to the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta. Efforts are underway to conserve and restore this significant historical site. With the opening of restaurants and a marina, Vittoriosa is experiencing a growth in tourist activity, while still preserving its rich history and authentic character.
