Understand
Corigliano Calabro, a large municipality in Calabria, has its roots in Arab origins. The town is surrounded by scattered villages, with Corigliano Scalo playing a crucial role in its development due to the construction of a railway there. Along the coastline, you will find the Port of Corigliano, established in 1958, which houses one of the largest naval bases in Calabria. Corigliano Calabro is closely linked with Rossano and together they form the unique municipality of Calabro-Rossano.
The name Corigliano Calabro has multiple interpretations. One version suggests that it derives from Corellianum, meaning Corellio farm. Another theory connects the name to other place names in southern Italy. According to a third interpretation, it originates from the Greek Byzantine term for "oil tree grove."
