Welcome to the remarkable Cocuy National Park, located along the border of the Boyacá and Arauca departments in Colombia. This natural wonder offers a breathtaking experience for adventurers seeking to explore its majestic landscapes and diverse ecosystems. After a temporary closure of 18 months, Cocuy National Park reopened in spring 2017, now exclusively allowing day-trips for visitors. The park presents three exhilarating trekking options, each lasting between 8 to 11 hours and providing a thrilling challenge for explorers. Please note that it is mandatory to be accompanied by a guide throughout your journey within the park. To fully prepare for your adventure, consider spending a day or two in the nearby villages of El Cocuy and Gican, where you can organize your trip to the national park. Keep in mind that there is a registration fee per visit, not per day, making it advantageous to register for all three treks at once. Take caution not to plan back-to-back day trips unless you possess extensive hiking experience, as most individuals require a full day to recuperate. To optimize your budget, try to find fellow hikers to share the cost of a guide, as each guide can accommodate up to six people. Guides typically charge around $100,000 per day, and transportation to and from the park can cost up to $200,000. Given the high altitudes reaching up to 4,800 meters, it is highly recommended to allocate a full day for acclimatization in one of the comfortable cabins located just outside the park. Many travelers have experienced the challenges of rising from the 2,800-meter altitude of the village to nearly 5,000 meters within the park in a single day, often struggling with altitude sickness. While guides and agencies in Cocuy and Gican may lack organization and fail to adequately prepare you for the treks' difficulties, don't be deterred. Seek out more experienced guides and embrace the thrilling challenge that awaits within the magnificent Cocuy National Park!
