Located in the heart of the Indian Ocean, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands are an oasis of tropical beauty, situated 2750km northwest of Perth and 900km west-southwest of Christmas Island, their closest neighbor. These islands lie within the lush tropical zone, blessed with a warm and humid climate that will transport you to paradise.
The Cocos (Keeling) Islands consist of 27 stunning coral islands. Discovered by Captain William Keeling in 1609, they remained uninhabited until the 19th century when they became populated. Originally under British control, they were later passed on to the Australian Government in 1955.
Two inhabited islands, West Island and Home Island, are home to a diverse population. Ethnic Europeans reside on West Island, while ethnic Malays live on Home Island. The islands sustain themselves through the cultivation of coconuts as their main cash crop. Local gardens and fishing provide additional sustenance, but most necessities are imported from Australia. The islands also boast a small but vibrant tourist industry.
