Clonmacnoise, founded by Ciarn Mac a tSaor, is a historical site in Co. Roscommon. With its strategic location, it became a thriving center of religion, learning, craftsmanship, and trade by the 9th century. Scholars from all over Europe would visit this famous Irish monastery. It also had close associations with the kings of Connacht and Meath, and it served as the burial place for many high kings of Tara and Connacht.
