Welcome to the breathtaking Cinque Terre, a collection of charming coastal towns in Italy. As of April 2016, some of the walking routes are closed, but fear not, there are still plenty of adventures to be had. The open blue walking routes will take you along the edge of the hills, offering stunning views and a bit of a workout. Don't forget to wear comfortable shoes, like running shoes or hiking boots, to tackle the steep climbs and rocky terrain. Each town in the Cinque Terre has its own unique charm. Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore exude an old-world atmosphere, with their narrow, colorful streets and ancient buildings. Monterosso, on the other hand, stands out with its beachy-resort vibe, lined with modern apartment blocks and hotels. In Riomaggiore, you'll be enchanted by the sound of chiming bell towers during the day and the lively chatter of frogs at night. Explore the ancient stone castello, which dates back to the mid-500s and now stands as a monument in the Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre. Stroll along Via Colombo, the main street, and indulge in delicious Italian treats at the local cafes, bars, and gelaterie. Manarola will captivate you with its charming boat-filled streets and delicious seafood. Try fresh anchovies from the sea, paired with lemon, olive oil, and crusty bread at La Cantina Dello Zio Bramante. Don't forget to take a dip in the sparkling blue waters from the little cement pier and explore the hidden swimming holes along the Blue Trail. Corniglia may require a bit of effort to reach, perched atop a tall hill, but the journey is worth it. Enjoy a glass of local wine at Bar Nunzio under the yellow umbrellas near the statue of Corniglia. Take in the beautiful sights and scents as you pass lemon trees, vines, and lush vegetation on your way to this picturesque town. When visiting Vernazza, you'll be greeted by ancient towers and a lively atmosphere. Don't be deterred by the peeling paint on the buildings; this town has a vibrant night scene, clock towers, a sandy beach, and plenty of outdoor seating areas to relax and take in the view. While the beach may not be the best for swimming, it's a safe spot for kids and offers a glimpse of the stunning coastline. Monterosso offers the best of both worlds, with the "old" town and the new town connected by a short road tunnel. The new town boasts a large sandy beach, colorful umbrellas, and beachside amenities. Explore the boutiques and shops in the old town and don't miss the statue at the end of the beach with its magnificent terrace. As you plan your visit, keep in mind that the streets in these towns can be steep and challenging, especially if you're carrying luggage. The train is a convenient mode of transportation, with Monterosso being the main stop for mainline trains. Make sure to check the train schedules and ticket availability. Get ready for an unforgettable adventure in the enchanting Cinque Terre, where history, natural beauty, and vibrant atmosphere await you!
