Get in
Chiricahua National Monument is located about 120 miles east of Tucson, a major city in Arizona. Getting to Chiricahua offers different route options.
From Tucson:
If you are traveling from Tucson, you can drive east on Interstate Highway 10 until you reach the small town of Willcox. From there, take Arizona Highway 186 south for 32 miles until you reach SR 181, which leads to the entrance of Chiricahua National Monument. Keep in mind that there are no reliable services between Willcox and Chiricahua, so it's advisable to fuel up and pick up any necessary supplies in town.
From the east:
If you are traveling from New Mexico, you can follow I-10 to Willcox and proceed as mentioned above. However, for a more scenic alternative, you can try an east-side approach via Apache Pass Road from exit 366 and the small town of Bowie. This route includes a visit to Fort Bowie National Historic Site, which is an interesting site to explore. The road continues over Apache Pass and connects with SR 181, leading to Chiricahua National Monument.
When taking this route, it's important to note that travel services are even farther, so make sure to have a full tank of gas before setting off. It's recommended to get fuel in Deming or Lordsburg, in southwestern New Mexico, and ensure your vehicle is in good condition as help may be hard to come by on this less-traveled road.
