Chilka lake serves as an essential habitat and breeding ground for various resident and migratory aquatic birds, with flamingos being a particularly notable species. This lake occupies the largest wintering ground for migratory birds in the entire Indian subcontinent. Every October, migratory birds make their way to Chilka lake from as far away as Siberia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Himalayas, and they typically stay until March. To protect this avian haven, a significant portion of the lake is designated as the Chilka Lake Bird Sanctuary, hosting over 150 species of migratory and resident birds. Additionally, the Nalaban Island within the lagoon is officially classified as a Bird Sanctuary under the wildlife protection act. Chilka lake also boasts a diverse range of aquatic life, encompassing 225 fish species and the magnificent Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella Brevirostris). One of the lake's small islands serves as the endemic home to the rare limbless lizard called barkudia insularis. The larger islands within Chilka lake, such as Parikud, Phulbari, Berahpura, Nuapara, Nalbana, and Tampara, are positioned between the sandbar and the lake, and they are separated by shallow channels. Additionally, there are also smaller islands like Breakfast Island, Honeymoon Island, and Beacon Island, each contributing to the lake's captivating beauty.
