Chilka Lake, located in India, is not only an enchanting natural landscape but also a vital habitat and breeding ground for various species of resident, migratory, and aquatic birds. It stands out as the largest wintering ground for migratory birds in the entire Indian subcontinent. Every October, these migratory birds arrive from far-flung places like Siberia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Himalayas, and they typically stay until March. The Chilka Lake Bird Sanctuary, a protected area within the lake, provides a haven for over 150 species of migratory and resident birds. Moreover, the Nalaban Island, found within the lagoon, is classified as a Bird Sanctuary under the wildlife protection act. The lake is also home to diverse aquatic life, boasting 225 species of fish and the magnificent Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella Brevirostris). One of the lake's small islands is even the exclusive habitat of the rare limbless lizard barkudia insularis. The lake comprises several larger islands, such as Parikud, Phulbari, Berahpura, Nuapara, Nalbana, and Tampara. These islands are situated between the lake and a sandbar, with shallow channels separating them. Additionally, there are numerous smaller islands, including Breakfast Island, Honeymoon Island, Beacon Island, and more.
