Once known as Epidaurum during Roman rule in 228 BC, this vibrant town has a rich and eventful history. During the civil war between Julius Caesar and Pompey, it took the side of Caesar and faced a fierce siege by Octavian. However, an unexpected arrival of a consul saved the town from destruction. As time went on, it became a Roman colonia and was later occupied by a fleet sent by Emperor Justinian during the Gothic Wars. Unfortunately, the city fell victim to the Avars and Slavs in the 7th century, leading to its ultimate demise. The surviving inhabitants sought refuge in the nearby island, Laus, which eventually transformed into the marvelous city of Dubrovnik.
Today, this fascinating town, now known as Cavtat, is a popular tourist destination.
