This divided toll road offers a direct path to the Catskills, with Exits 16 to 21 serving as entry points. Just a short distance from New York City, Exit 19 at Kingston is where you'll embark on your journey westward. For those heading towards the central Catskills, the preferred route is New York State Route 28. Starting from Kingston, this scenic highway leads you to the heart of the region, passing through charming villages like Woodstock and Phoenecia. Another option is New York State Route 17, which is in the process of being converted to Interstate 86. Beginning at Thruway Exit 16 in Harriman, this freeway takes you on a westward journey, offering access to various parts of the Catskills. If you're seeking a quieter experience, Route 206 is the way to go. Starting in Roscoe, this road takes you through Delaware County, showcasing the serene towns of Downsville, Walton, Masonville, and Franklin. It eventually leads to Greene, NY, and further on to Whitney Point, NY, where it meets Interstate 81. For those interested in the magnificent peaks of the Blackhead Range in the Escarpment, Exit 21 on the Thruway is your best bet. From there, New York State Route 23 winds its way up the north face of the Escarpment, offering scenic views and passing famous lookout points like Five State Lookout.
