Understand
The Castelli region is a volcanic area with a fascinating history. It is home to two beautiful lakes, Albano and Nemi, formed within the former crater. As the altitude of this area is higher than that of Rome, it has been a favorite summer destination for the wealthy Romans since ancient times. Even the Popes have their summer residence at Castel Gandolfo, adding to the area's allure. Besides its breathtaking natural landscape, the Castelli region is well-known for its wine, particularly the famous Frascati. Although the overall quality of the wine is not always exceptional, there are a few honorable exceptions worth exploring. If you're a food lover, you must try the mouthwatering porchetta (roasted pork meat) in Ariccia, or indulge in the delicious berry fruits of Nemi. And if you're an adventurous foodie, you'll be pleased to know that the Castelli is also home to a wide variety of mushrooms, waiting to be discovered. For those interested in history and culture, the Castelli Romani region offers a range of small, yet fascinating museums. All the information about these museums can be found on their shared website at [1]. Get ready to be enraptured by the beauty, flavors, and heritage of the Castelli region!
Get in
The picturesque towns of the Castelli Romani can be easily reached from Rome. There are two train lines that connect Rome with Frascati, Marino, Castel Gandolfo, and Albano. If you prefer to fly, you can also access the area through Ciampino airport, which is now used by budget airlines like Ryanair [2]. However, be aware that finding a taxi to take you back to Rome might be a challenge. If you're planning to drive, the Castelli area is conveniently accessible by car. Just make sure to avoid Sundays between April and September, as it tends to get crowded. To reach the Castelli, you can take either the Via Appia Nuova or the Via Tuscolana from Rome. If you choose the Appia route, turn left at the end of the Ciampino Airport runway and follow the scenic Via dei Laghi (Road of the Lakes). Along the way, you'll pass charming towns like Marino and finally reach the beautiful Lake Albano. Keep in mind that some of the higher towns in the Castelli have narrow and winding roads, so be prepared for an adventurous drive.
