Understand
Cairo, a city steeped in ancient origins, lies along the magnificent Nile River. It has a rich history, with its beginnings dating back to the Pharaonic city of Memphis. In 641 AD, the Arab general Amr Ibn Al-Ase conquered Egypt for Islam and founded a new capital named Misr Al-Fustat, meaning "the City of the Tents". The legend goes that Al-Ase found two doves nesting in his tent and chose not to disturb them, thus establishing the site for the new city in what is now known as Old Cairo. The city further evolved when the Tunisian Fatimid dynasty captured it in 969 AD and created a new city called Al-Qahira, which gave birth to the name Cairo that we use today in English. However, the locals still refer to it as Mar, the Egyptian dialectal version of Amr's Mir. Interestingly, Mar is also the Arabic name for the entire country of Egypt, adding a touch of confusion and mystique to the city's identity.
