Understand
Welcome to the extraordinary national park named after its awe-inspiring mountains: Mount Semeru, the highest peak in Java at 3,676m, and Mount Bromo, the most popular among visitors. This remarkable landscape is also home to the Tengger people. Mount Semeru, known as Mahameru or the "Great Mountain," entices mountaineers with its frequent and reliable eruptions. Spectacularly, the volcano emits massive clouds of steam, smoke, and even ash and stones every 20 minutes or so. Climbing Mount Semeru requires careful planning and a permit from the national park authority, as the mountain occasionally closes due to its highly active nature. On the other hand, Mount Bromo, standing at 2,329m, displays its dramatic beauty by showcasing a blown-off top and a constantly emitting crater filled with white sulfurous smoke. It resides within the enormous Tengger caldera, a vast expanse extending roughly 10km and surrounded by the magnificent Laut Pasir, a sea of fine volcanic sand. The scene is surreal, especially when contrasting it with the lush green valleys encompassing the caldera. To access Mount Bromo, head to Cemoro Lawang, located at the northeastern edge of the caldera. Alternatively, there are trails available from Tosari to the northwest and Ngadas to the southwest. As you make your way, be captivated by the picturesque villages of Cemoro Lawang and Ngadisari, adorned with brightly painted houses and charming flower beds. It's a destination that will leave you in awe of its natural wonders.
Get in
Mount Bromo is a highly accessible and popular active volcano in Java. It attracts many domestic tourists, including high school groups who often camp in the area. To avoid large crowds, it is best to visit during non-holiday periods. While the Tenggar caldera in the Mount Bromo volcano complex has erupted in the past, quiet enjoyment of the park is possible as long as there are no ongoing eruptions. However, caution is advised in case of any volcanic activity.
