Brighton, once a small fishing village called Brighthelmstone, gained popularity when Dr. Richard Russell of Lewes began prescribing seawater for his patients in 1750. He even built a large house near the beach for himself and his patients. Brighton's growth was further fueled by the construction of the extravagant Royal Pavilion by the Prince of Wales in the early 19th Century.
