Understand
Breton Point State Park, located in Rhode Island, has a fascinating history. The land was once owned by William Brenton, an American Colonial Official, who had a grand estate called Hammersmith farm. The estate was later passed on to Theodore Davis, a famous Egyptologist, who built impressive structures like the Reef mansion, the Carriage House stables, the Tower with a clock and chimes, and the Bungalow. In 1941, the army took control of the land for Coastal Artillery Battery purposes. Unfortunately, the main house was destroyed by a fire in 1960 and eventually torn down in 1963. However, the state of Rhode Island took over the property and opened it as a state park in 1976. While the beautiful farmlands and gardens are now overgrown, visitors can still enjoy flying kites, picnicking in the wide field, exploring woodsy trails, admiring the Carriage House and Tower, and enjoying the rocky shoreline for fishing, climbing, shell collecting, or simply relaxing.
