The dukes held titles, wealth, and even controlled the ducal mint. One of the most remarkable landmarks in Bouillon is the Bouillon Castle. It dates back to the 13th century and has stood the test of time. The castle played a crucial role in the territory of the Ardennes-Bouillon dynasty, serving as a fortification and symbol of their power. Godfrey of Bouillon, a legendary figure, was one of the famous lords of Bouillon. He led the First Crusade and became the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Can you believe that he once owned Bouillon Castle? Later on, it was sold to the Bishopric of Lige, and the bishops even bestowed the title of dukes of Bouillon upon themselves. Bouillon Castle bore witness to this fascinating history. Throughout the years, Bouillon remained a strategic and prized location, earning the nickname "the key to the Ardennes." Even after becoming a sovereign duchy, it retained its independence as a protectorate. However, everything changed when the French army conquered the town in 1678.
