Long before European settlers arrived, the Ojibway people, also known as the Anishnawbe, called this area their home. They lived off the land, hunting for precious metals and furs. The Europeans, led by explorer Samuel de Champlain, came in the 1600s and started to explore the region. The area around Blind River played a significant role in the fur trading industry. Trappers settled along the banks of the river, which eventually became an important trading route known as the Voyageur Route. The settlers established a fur trading post in 1789, which later became part of the Hudson Bay Company in 1820. As the copper mining industry in nearby Bruce Mines grew in the 1800s, Blind River became a hub for sawmills. These sawmills provided timber and planks for the mining operations. The town was officially incorporated in 1906, and saw further development with the construction of a second sawmill and the establishment of the Blind River Marine Park. But Blind River's history doesn't stop there. Uranium was discovered in the area in 1955, leading to the opening of Pronto Mines and the establishment of the Blind River-Elliot Lake Uranium mining camp. Today, the area is home to a uranium refinery, owned by Cameco Corporation, which processes uranium concentrates from all over the world. Blind River's rich history is a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of its inhabitants. From fur trading to mining, this town has played a significant role in shaping the region's economy and development.
