By car, finding your way to Birsay is an adventure in itself. From the charming town of Kirkwall, take the A965 towards Stromness. As you navigate the scenic route, turn right on the A986 and continue your journey. Be prepared for an exhilarating twist - at Twatt, the road transforms into the A967, leading you straight to your destination. Just before reaching the end of the road, you'll encounter the intersection with A966, marking the entrance to Birsay. If you prefer a more leisurely journey, hop on the local bus service, Orkney Coaches #6, #7, or #8. The bus conveniently stops near the Palace, right outside the general store. Please note that this service has limited availability. From Kirkwall bus station, catch the bus on weekdays at 07:00 and 17:10, with additional services on Monday at 13:50 and Thursday at 17:35. On Saturdays, there are departures at 11:05 and 17:35, taking approximately 40 minutes to reach Birsay. From Stromness bus station, buses operate on weekdays at 13:20, with an extra Monday morning service at 09:30. When the Stronmess Academy is in session, buses also run Monday - Friday at 15:20. For those visiting from June to September, enjoy the Wednesday and Friday departures at 09:30 and 16:30. On Saturdays, buses to Birsay are available at 07:25 and 12:35, with a travel duration of around 30 minutes. Please note that there is no local bus service on Sundays on the Orkney Islands.
