The city's fascinating history is intertwined with the legacy of Aleksander Ludwik Radziwi, who constructed the grand residence that still stands today. For centuries, this city belonged to the Radziwiłł family, only transitioning to different ownership in the late 19th century. This city is also proud to have supported the establishment of a prestigious academy back in 1628. In fact, one of Poland's first theaters was established here in 1700. However, this historical town also bears the scars of German Nazi atrocities, as they executed local partisans and hostages during World War II. A poignant memorial now stands on the main market square, a somber reminder of the past.
