Understand
Beverwijk, a town with a history dating back to the 10th century, gained its official status in 1298. It was once a pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages and attracted wealthy merchants who built grand homes. Following its merger with Wijk aan Zee in 1936, Beverwijk experienced rapid growth due to the expansion of the Hoogovens Steel Works after World War II. Today, the municipality is home to approximately 40,000 residents. Interestingly, the city of Albany in New York, USA, was founded by Dutch settlers who named it Beverwijck, after our very own Beverwijk!
